What is acne?
Acne, the most common skin condition in the United States, develops when the follicles within your skin get blocked with sebum. Sebum is a natural oil that your skin produces to carry dead skin cells to the surface where they eventually fall off.
Everyone produces sebum, but not everyone gets acne. Often, an overproduction of sebum comes from hormonal changes related to puberty, menstruation, stress, or pregnancy and results in acne. In other cases, acne breakouts are the result of greasy cosmetic products or certain medications.
During a breakout, you develop small bumps where the sebum has clogged the pore. These acne bumps can be:
Cysts embedded in deep layers of skin
Naturally occurring bacteria on your skin can infect the pimples and cause irritation and inflammation.
What are the long-term effects of acne?
At Wallace Skin & Body Institute, Dr. Wallace evaluates your acne and helps you determine its causes. Although there are many treatments available for acne, most mild cases are manageable with routine skin care.
Dr. Wallace’s product line, Wallace Skincare, includes the BELIEVE anti-acne clear skin kit to manage acne with a gentle foam cleanser, spot treatment, brightening cream, moisturizer with sunscreen, and a detoxifying mask.
If your acne is severe and requires further clinical treatment, Dr. Wallace works with you to develop a plan.
Options for acne include:
Blue light therapy
Chemical peels like the VI Peel® or the Beta-Lift salicylic acid peel
Dr. Wallace evaluates your acne throughout treatment. While creating your personalized treatment plan, he considers strategies that decrease oil production, bring down inflammation, and prevent scarring. It can take months or years for your skin to clear fully, depending on the severity of your case.
Severe or persistent acne can have a major impact on your self-image. To explore clinical treatments for acne and acne scars, call Wallace Skin & Body Institute, or request an appointment online right away.
