What is acne?
Acne, the most common skin condition in the United States, develops when the follicles within your skin get blocked with sebum. Sebum is a natural oil that your skin produces to carry dead skin cells to the surface where they eventually fall off.
Everyone produces sebum, but not everyone gets acne. Often, an overproduction of sebum comes from hormonal changes related to puberty, menstruation, stress, or pregnancy and results in acne. In other cases, acne breakouts are the result of greasy cosmetic products or certain medications.
